Best quote for 2009

december 31st, 2008

I chose a quote for the new year which I think is more important for me, than ever in my life. This two sentences make you think about your life, so prepare for it. The quote is from the TV Show, called Angel (Season 2, “Epiphany”):

“Nothing matters in this world. So all that matters is what we do.”

Have a Very Successful New Year!

What I got from Christmas…from me!

december 23rd, 2008

First time in many years I surprised myself with some books. Ever since I read the biography of Roy Keane a few years back, I wanted to read more books in English. I have a few favorite authors like Tom Clancy and Philip K. Dick. Both are legends in the genre.

In short, Tom Clancy created the techno-thriller genre. His books are very authentic about the US military, politics and the secret service. He claims that you can find these information in public. His first novel was The Hunt for the Red October. His novels are very long, about 800-1000 pages. I like them, ’cause the stories are exciting and you can learn a lot of new words in any language.

Philip Kendred Dick is one of the master of science fiction. People discovered him late and then his novels and short stories become the basics for many movies. Probably the most famous is Blade Runner, which was based on “Do Androids Dream About Electronic Sheep”. Unfortunetly he died before the Blade Runner premiere. Because of the complexity of his stories, Hollywood really can’t adapt them, but they try again and again. Dick’s stories are not always what they seem, and that’s why the fans like his style.

I bought the books from Bookline, which is a Hungarian online bookstore. It has a wide range of selection, and you can buy the newest and most popular books almost at the same time as they come out.

I will write about these books after I finished them, or if I have something to write. I’ve never read two book simultaneously, but I try this time. Both novels are for advanced readers.

Tom Clancy: Red Rabbit

“Tom Clancy returns to Jack Ryan’s early days, in an extraordinary novel of global political drama. Long before becoming President, Jack Ryan is a novice CIA Analyst. One of his first assignments is to debrief a high-level Soviet defector who tells an amazing tale of officials planning to assassinate Pope John Paul II. In the end, however, it will not just be the Pope’s life, but the stability of the Western world that is at stake.”

Philip K. Dick: The Penultimate Truth

“World War III is raging – or so the millions of people crammed in their underground tanks believe. For fiteen years, subterranean humanity has been fed on daily broadcasts of a never-ending nuclear destruction, sustained by a belief in the all powerful Protector. But up on Earth’s surface, a different kind of reality reigns. East and West are at peace. Across the planet, an elite corps of expert hoaxers live invast private demesnes – repayment for their services in preserving the great lie.Until, one day, a tanker emerges and discovers the path to the most sinister truth of all…”
